The Local in Siem Reap has reopened their doors. If the name sounds familiar, this is not a new craft beer bar. They´ve just been on a 3-year hiatus and now they are back!
The owner David left for the states for a few years during COVID. He told me it was the right thing to do for his family´s needs during the pandemic. Now he’s back in the Kingdom and ready to make a difference in the Siem Reap craft beer scene.
The Local is not only a bar, they actually brew their own beers. It is a brewpub that also sells beers from other breweries. During the opening week, they had beers from Riel Brewing and Cerevisia among others. With the help of these brewers, they were able to fill almost all 13 taps already on their opening day. Initially, the plan was to have 11 taps but because of their latest addition of a Fuzzy Logic kegerator, they now have 13 taps available. That´s definitely one of the largest selections in Cambodia.
The Local was really early with brewing their own beers and they’ve been around since 2016. Here are some of the most popular beers they have brewed throughout the years:
- Apology Juice
- Creme Brulee Stout
- Mojob
We´ve always thought Apology Juice was an interesting name for a beer so we asked Dave the story of the beer. Here is what he told us:
Apology Juice was named after a dear friend who drank too much and was asked to leave for the evening. Its malty flavour, single centennial hopped profile, and smooth mouthfeel makes it an incredibly smashable beer at 6.7%. Our dear friend showed up the next morning and said he has been apologizing to most of the town all morning and blamed our easy-to-drink beer calling it Apology Juice.
The first week they hosted a show from comedian Trevor Lock, together with Comedy in Cambodia. More than 30 people showed up and as you can see from the picture it looks like a cozy little event!
